Dry and Watery Eyes: Simple Plumbing Fixes That Help

By Eye Philosophy | Understanding Tear Drainage & Eye Comfort

Your eyes have a natural plumbing system – and just like any plumbing, sometimes it needs a little maintenance.

At the top of each eye is a tear gland, constantly producing tears to keep your eyes lubricated, clean, and comfortable. These tears flow across the surface of the eye and then drain through small openings in your eyelids (called puncta) into your nose. It’s a beautifully balanced system — unless something goes wrong.

At Eye Philosophy, we see patients with two common – and opposite – tear drainage problems. Here’s what you need to know:

Problem 1: Dry Eyes – Not Enough Tears or Fast Drainage

If your eyes feel dry, gritty, or irritated, it might be due to underproduction of tears — or tears draining away too quickly. Using our plumbing analogy: the “shower” is barely running, or the water’s draining too fast.

In this case, we may recommend a punctal plug, a tiny device inserted into the tear duct (punctum) to slow drainage and help keep moisture on the eye surface longer.

Key points about punctal plugs:

  • They can be temporary (dissolvable) or semi-permanent (removable)
  • They’re invisible and comfortable — you won’t feel them
  • They may reduce inflammation in dry eye conditions

Problem 2: Watery Eyes – Tears Not Draining Properly

On the flip side, if you have tears constantly running down your cheeks, it might mean your tear ducts are blocked, preventing proper drainage.

This is like a clogged drain — the water’s there, but it’s backing up. Common causes include:

  • Mucous or debris buildup
  • Age-related narrowing of the tear duct
  • Previous infections or inflammation

We can often treat this in-practice by flushing the tear ducts — a gentle, quick, and painless procedure. For more complex blockages, we may refer you to an eye surgeon for a specialist opinion.
