Whether you’re new to contact lenses or have been wearing them for years, it’s important to follow safe practices. Proper care not only ensures comfort but also helps maintain your long-term eye health.
Here’s a quick guide to the do’s and don’ts every contact lens wearer should keep in mind.
The Do’s of Contact Lens Care
1. Always Wash Your Hands First
Before handling your contact lenses, wash your hands with antibacterial soap and dry them with a lint-free towel. This helps avoid transferring dirt, bacteria, or fibres to your lenses.
2. Use a Clean, Dry Space
Avoid inserting or removing your lenses in the bathroom, which is often one of the most bacteria-prone areas in a home. Instead, choose a clean, dry surface free from dust and clutter.
3. Disinfect Lenses Daily
Use the solution recommended by your optometrist, preferably a hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectant for deep cleaning. Never substitute with tap water or other fluids.
4. Keep Backup Glasses On Hand
If your eyes feel irritated or your lenses don’t feel right, switch to glasses. Having a backup ensures you’re not tempted to wear lenses when your eyes need a break.
5. Follow Replacement Schedules
Replace soft contact lenses according to their opened lifespan, not just days of wear. For example, monthly lenses must be discarded 30 days after opening, even if you’ve only worn them a few times.
6. Have Regular Eye Exams
Even if everything feels fine, some lens-related complications can go unnoticed. Regular checkups allow your optometrist to assess lens fit, eye health, and vision quality.
The Don’ts of Contact Lens Wear
1. Don’t Sleep in Your Lenses (Unless Instructed)
Only wear lenses overnight if your optometrist has prescribed them for that purpose. Sleeping in regular lenses significantly increases your risk of eye infections.
2. Don’t Swim in Contact Lenses
Water in pools, oceans, or showers can carry harmful bacteria and parasites. If you swim frequently, consider daily disposable lenses with goggles or ask about orthokeratology options.
3. Never Lick Your Lenses
Saliva is full of bacteria. If your lens needs rinsing, only use preservative-free saline solution – never your mouth.
4. Avoid Tap Water for Cleaning or Storage
Tap water is not sterile and can introduce dangerous microbes to your eyes. Always store your lenses in the solution recommended by your optometrist.
5. Don’t Wear Lenses with Red or Sore Eyes
If your eyes are red, sore, itchy, or producing discharge, remove your lenses immediately. If symptoms persist, book an eye exam as soon as possible.
6. Do Not Use Expired Products
Always check expiry dates on both lenses and cleaning solutions. Once opened, most solutions are effective for up to 3 months — after that, their disinfecting power declines.
Your Eye Health Comes First
When in doubt, take them out. If your eyes aren’t feeling or looking right, it’s safer to remove your lenses and consult your optometrist. At Eye Philosophy, we’re here to help you maintain safe, comfortable contact lens wear with personalised advice and professional care.
