Introducing Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

A revolutionary corrective lens technology that works miracles while you sleep.

Eye Philosophy is one of Melbourne’s leading providers of Ortho K lenses. We take a holistic approach to Ortho K, assessing whether or not your eyes are suitable for Ortho K and making it as easy as possible to get started using this technology. We utilise the latest in digital imaging technology to map out the curvature of the eye (known as corneal topography). This allows the creation of custom-made night contact lenses that gently mould the surface of the eye to correct vision. Ortho-K is an ideal treatment for those with short-sightedness who wish to see clearly without the inconvenience of wearing glasses or day time contact lenses or are apprehensive about the risks associated with laser eye surgery.

Night Contact Lenses for Better Vision

Ortho K lenses are also known as night contact lenses, due to the way they work. By slowly reshaping your eyes as you sleep they can gently and effectively correct your vision. While they are effective, the effects are not permanent and require you to wear the lenses every night or every second night. This way, you get the full benefits with the option of completely reversing them over time should you choose to move to glasses, daytime contacts, or laser eye surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Vision Problems Can Ortho K Correct?

Ortho K is excellent at correcting myopia (near-sightedness) and is most commonly used for this. We’ve had great success correcting prescriptions of -6, sometimes even further if the conditions are right. Depending on the severity of the vision problem Ortho K can also correct astigmatism, presbyopia, and hyperopia. If you’re not sure your vision problem can be corrected, book a comprehensive eye test and our optometrist can tell you exactly what you can expect from Ortho K.

How long do the effects last?

After wearing Ortho K night contact lenses for a few nights in a row your vision can stay clear for up to two days on average. Of course, everyone’s eyes are different and the effects of Ortho K may last longer or shorter depending on this.

Are there age restrictions for Ortho K?

While there are no age restrictions, Ortho K naturally works better for kids, as their eyes are still developing and will form more correctly with night lenses. Adults will benefit from Ortho K as well, though effects can vary from person to person.

What are the differences between night contact lenses and day lenses?

Daytime lenses are not designed to be worn for long periods of activity and are lighter and thinner because of this. Ortho K lenses can be heavier than regular contacts to enable proper eye reshaping. They’re also made of a material that is highly oxygen-permeable, allowing them to be worn for long periods without damaging your eyes.

Do You Need to Wear Ortho K Lenses Every Night?

At the start, you will have to wear them every night as your eyes adjust. Over time you might find that you only have to wear your lenses every second or third night, but this greatly varies from person to person.

Do I need to replace my Ortho K Lenses?

Over time your Ortho K lenses will wear down, which will stop them from having the best effectiveness. Your optometrist will tell you when it is time to replace your lenses, but most people get them replaced every 1-2 years.

Who Can Wear Ortho K?

Using the latest in modern technology,  we can assess your eyes to determine your suitability for Ortho K. There are also no age restrictions for Ortho K, so even children qualify for Ortho K! We have successfully provided Ortho K to many happy patients, from children as young as 7. The best way to determine whether you’re a suitable candidate for Ortho K is to book a free assessment.

How Long Does It Take To See Improvements To My Vision?

Most patients have rapid improvement in the first few days of treatment and achieve nearly their optimum vision in 10 to 14 days.

Are There Any Risks Involved?

Ortho K is completely safe, non-surgical, non-invasive and reversible. The risks of wearing Ortho K are very low and comparable to that of wearing normal contact lenses. With good hygiene and proper care, you can experience the full range of benefits that Ortho K can provide.

Is It Painful?

Ortho K is not painful, however, it can take a little while for you to adjust to, particularly if you have never worn contact lenses. During your Ortho K appointment, we will show you how to properly use your lenses and look after your eyes.

What Happens If I Break Or Damage A Lens?

We understand that when learning how to use your Ortho K for the first time, you may accidentally break your lenses during insertion, removal or cleaning. That’s why we have a warranty for any accidental breakages within the first 3 months.

How Much Does Ortho-K Cost?

Pricing for Ortho K starts from $1,600 per pair, however, this can vary depending on your individual vision. We also offer payment plans and AfterPay.
